Adult Autism Assessment in Ireland: Process, Masking and Evidence

A current guide to adult autism assessment in Ireland, including developmental history, masking, online suitability, HSE pathways and private assessment questions.

Adult Autism Assessment in Ireland: Process, Masking and Evidence
Direct answerAdult autism assessment considers lifelong patterns in communication, social interaction, sensory experience, routines, focused interests, flexibility and functioning, while accounting for masking and other possible explanations.

Current access in Ireland

Ireland’s public autism pathways are changing. In May 2026 the HSE announced a standardised tiered autism assessment and intervention protocol that includes adults. Availability and implementation may differ by area, so current public access should be checked directly with the HSE alongside any private options.

Developmental evidence

Autism is neurodevelopmental, so the assessment considers childhood as well as current life. This may involve a developmental interview with the person, a relative or another credible source, and review of school, health or other records when available.

Masking and compensation

Some adults consciously study social expectations, rehearse conversations, suppress visible distress or copy other people’s behaviour. A brief appointment may therefore underestimate effort and impact. Assessment should explore what happens before, during and after social or sensory demands.

Methods and clinical judgement

The pathway may include interviews, questionnaires, observation and information from another person. No single score should be treated as the entire assessment. Methods need to be integrated with development, context, strengths, impairment and differential considerations.

Feedback and support

A useful outcome explains what is supported, what remains uncertain and which environments or adjustments may help. Recommendations may relate to communication, sensory needs, executive functioning, work, education, relationships or further assessment.

Common questions

Is a GP referral required for private adult autism assessment?

A private provider can normally be contacted directly. Public access and referral arrangements should be confirmed with the HSE because pathways are changing.

Can I be assessed if a parent is unavailable?

Possibly. The clinician considers other sources and the strength of the available developmental evidence, while explaining limitations.

Can autism and ADHD be assessed together?

Yes, where the provider is competent in both and a combined pathway is appropriate. Each conclusion still needs its own supporting evidence.
